Man caught on camera and suspected of stealing laptop surrenders
Jan 17, 2013 (Sun Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
A man captured on video swiping a laptop from a Boynton Beach McDonald's has surrendered -- after seeing himself on the video on TV and several news websites.
Boynton Beach police spokeswoman Stephanie Slater said that Shawon Charles Leandre, 19, of 2919 Dorson Way in Delray Beach, surrendered to police Thursday and is charged with grand theft.
She said Leandre told police that friends called him Wednesday and said they saw video of him stealing a laptop. Leandre then watched a later news broadcast and saw the video himself. He also said that family members called him after seeing the video on the Boynton Beach Police Department Facebook and YouTube pages.
Leandre was charged with grand theft in the laptop theft, which happened Jan. 1
The victim, Shango Chatman, 42, of Flint, Mich., told police that at around 8:05 p.m., he stepped outside the McDonald's restaurant at 1810 S. Federal Highway to smoke a cigarette, leaving his laptop and cell phone on the table.
Surveillance video clearly shows a man in a striped Polo-style shirt and white shorts stealing the items.
The suspect begins by casing the table -- walking back and forth near it, apparently waiting to see if its owner is nearby. After about a minute, he puts the laptop's power cord in his pocket. He then lifts his shirt and struggles for several seconds to put the laptop in his shorts.
He walks away but comes back for the cell phone. He comes back again and uses his shirt in an attempt to wipe his fingerprints off the table. He then pedaled away on a tan, beach-cruiser type bicycle.
The video was posted all over South Florida on Jan. 16. In addition to family and friends, a Delray Beach officer also said she recognized the suspect. Early Thursday, Leandre surrendered at the Delray Beach Police Department.
