Cisco News - Cisco to Acquire Cariden for $141M

By Madhubanti Rudra, TMCnet Contributor

The networking giant, Cisco (News - Alert), has just announced its intention to acquire Cariden for $141 million. Cariden employees will integrate with Cisco's Service Provider Networking Group.

Sunnyvale, California-based Cariden is a source of network planning, design and traffic management solutions for telecommunications service providers. The firm is known in the networking industry for its capacity planning and management tools for IP/MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) networks.

These solutions have already been deployed by many fixed and mobile network operators worldwide.

Cisco’s Service Provider Networking Group will be the one to directly benefit from the acquisition. In an effort to expand its capabilities in mobile communication space, the group will leverage Cariden technologies for multilayer modeling and the optimization of optical transport and IP/MPLS networks.

Cariden's products and technology is expected to advance Cisco's nLight technology for IP and optical convergence. At a time when Internet and mobile traffic is growing at a dramatic pace and traffic patterns become increasingly complex, global service providers are trying to address network challenges by converging their Internet Protocol (IP) and optical networks.

In this situation, the incorporation of Cariden technology into Cisco solutions is expected to help Cisco’s service provider clients enhance the visibility, programmability and efficiency of their converged networks.

This in turn will enable them to manage bandwidth, network traffic and intelligence more efficiently, thereby improving service velocity.

The acquisition will support Cisco’s Open Network Environment (ONE) strategy and provide service providers with sophisticated wide area networking (WAN) orchestration capabilities. These capabilities will allow service providers to improve both the programmability of their networks and the utilization of existing network assets across the IP and optical transport layers.

“The Cariden acquisition reinforces Cisco's commitment to offering service providers the technologies they need to optimize and monetize their networks, and ultimately grow their businesses,” said senior vice president and general manager of Cisco's Service Provider Networking Group, Surya Panditi. “Given the widespread convergence of IP and optical networks, Cariden's technology will help carriers more efficiently manage bandwidth, network traffic and intelligence. This acquisition signals the next phase in Cisco's packet and optical convergence strategy and further strengthens our ability to lead this market transition in networking.”

Recently, Cisco introduced its advanced Wi-Fi location data analytics platform to help businesses enhance customer experiences and create new monetization opportunities.
