Qualcomm (News - Alert) Atheros a networking and connectivity solutions provider and Cisco join hands to accelerate indoor location services for public and private deployments where Cisco wireless infrastructure is deployed.

Cormac Conroy, vice president, location products and technology, Qualcomm Atheros (News - Alert) said, “Qualcomm Atheros is enhancing the mobile experience by providing more precise context about who, and what, is nearby, in any environment.”

The Qualcomm IZat indoor location services platform together with the Cisco (News - Alert) “Connected Mobile Experience” solution will enhance indoor location accuracy besides ensuring optimum service discovery and context awareness in retail, travel and hospitality areas. This collaboration will ignite more technology innovations in the field of indoor location.

Consumers depend largely on their mobile devices and location-based apps to receive information and enable interaction. But some apps and services are not delivered optimally in urban environments and indoors, where satellite systems cannot provide location data.

To tide over this problem Qualcomm Atheros and Cisco are geared up to provide more precise indoor location capabilities besides ensuring interoperability between their respective solutions. This will augment service discovery and contextual awareness capabilities and enhance consumer experience.

This will also deliver huge benefits to venue owners, application developers, mobile device and networking OEMs, and consumers, said officials.

“Working with Cisco to build an ecosystem of interoperable positioning technologies, we are creating new opportunities for mobile OEMs, operators and venues to roll out location-based services that deliver relevant and timely information to the customers they serve, whenever a smartphone based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon processor is near or within a Mobile Services Engine powered Wi-Fi network,” added Conroy.

Cisco Connected Mobile Experiences offers the Wi-Fi Passpoint (HotSpot 2.0) solution that helps integrate indoor location and real-time analytic technologies to provide personalized mobile services and content. It is based on the Cisco Mobility Services Engine that uses an existing access point infrastructure. App developers use this contextual information to deploy mobile applications and services to consumers effectively.

Qualcomm Atheros also announced that it has expanded the Qualcomm IZat location platform with enhancements that bring precise indoor positioning capabilities to the leading brands of mobile phones, tablets and network infrastructure. IZat indoor location solutions will enable compelling consumer experiences in public places and help open revenue streams in the retail, travel, entertainment and hospitality industries.
