Cisco News - Cisco Offers Faster Performance with the Nexus 3548
By Frank Griffin, TMCnet Contributing Writer
When a nanoseconds can be the difference between making and losing millions of dollars, the speed of your network has to be the fastest available technology in the market. The financial markets are globally interconnected and they demand speed, accuracy and security in their platforms to ensure every execution is carried out with the fastest and most reliable network available. The Cisco (News - Alert) Nexus 3548 with Algo Boost or Algorithm Boost gives customers with the need for uncompromising speed a platform with great control and visibility.
The 3548 switch delivers up to 60 percent network-access performance improvement over competing full-featured 10 Gigabit (GB) Ethernet switches, according to Cisco. The platform is designed for organizations with big data environments, high performance computing and trading. The switch is capable of network access performance of 190 (ns) nanoseconds.
The value of this type of speed can best be summarized by an industry expert in the financial market: David Rukshin, senior vice president, The D. E. Shaw Group,"We trade in markets around the globe in an increasingly competitive environment, and investing in state-of-the-art technology is one of the keys to producing attractive returns for our investors. Detecting and handling short-lived congestion in information flows is business critical, since the latency of packets that experience congestion in the network would be significantly higher than the nominal latency of modern Ethernet switches. Detecting these microbursts of traffic and measuring short-lived congestion in hardware should be very valuable to our investment businesses."
The Nexus 3548 delivers stock market data to financial trading servers in as little as 50 ns with the warp switch port analyzer (SPAN) feature, and the Hitless Network Address Translation (NAT) allows algorithmic traders to connect to venues without latency penalty.
The Active Buffer Monitoring checks for congestion and issues alerts, and the Intelligent Traffic Mirroring filters and time stamps captured traffic in a nanosecond to give traders analytic tools to recognize inefficiencies in their trading practices and make better decisions.
The speed of the switch was verified using Spirent (News - Alert) TestCenter with different types of workloads. Along with its superior speed it helps trading firms stay synchronized so events taking place in the network can be used to verify disputes as well as meet regulatory compliance.
"Today, Cisco has leapfrogged our competitors in delivering a full featured switch that offers the lowest latency Ethernet in the networking industry. The Nexus 3548 with the unique Cisco Algo Boost technology implemented in ASIC provides a robust feature set to give financial traders more control over their sophisticated trading algorithms and respond more quickly to the changes in the market.” David Yen, senior vice president of Data Center Group at Cisco.
