Cisco News - Elster and Cisco Deliver Sophisticated Smart Grid Solutions
By Carolyn J Dawson, TMCnet Contributor
Elster recently announced that it has collaborated with Cisco (News - Alert) to offer smart grid offerings for field area networks. The latest offerings will incorporate Elster's EnergyAxis System with the Cisco Connected Grid Endpoint reference design. The incorporated offering not only presents the powerful, flexible Universal technology of Elster, but also reveals backing for Cisco's proficiency in standards-based and interoperable communication offerings.
Utility consumers will be offered a flexible, safe, and cost-effective Advanced Metering Infrastructure or AMI communications infrastructure with this incorporation of communication functions into sophisticated meters. The Elster EnergyAxis architecture will be incorporated inside the Cisco IPv6 RF Mesh reference design as a part of the latest offering.
An entire portfolio of communications offerings for the smart grid, like the Connected Grid Endpoint reference design; an array of switching, routing, network administration and security products for the Field Area Network, Transmission & Substations and Grid Operation; and Plus Connected Grid Services has been developed by Cisco.
The EnergyAxis architecture from Elster allows smart meters to behave as sensors for Distribution Automation and Asset Management applications like Outage Notification, Voltage Monitoring, Asset Monitoring, and Loss Detection. Utilities can therefore mine out additional value from their AMI investments with these sophisticated offerings. Elster’s EnergyAxis System interoperability and standards-based optimization will be extended with the inclusion of the Connected Grid Endpoint reference design.
In a statement, Lionel Chocron, VP, Connected Energy Networks, Cisco said, "Cisco is committed to supporting our customers' need for interoperable vendor solutions. By licensing the reference design to industry leaders such as Elster, we are enabling utilities to combine AMI communications over a common, reliable and secure communications infrastructure."
Elster's REXUniversal meter platform features ground-breaking Software-Defined Radio and sophisticated software based metrology. Utilities are therefore able to implement this device with the Cisco GridBlocks Solution Architecture, the Landis+Gyr GridStream architecture and the Elster EnergyAxis Architecture in a flexible manner.
Ed Myszka, president, Elster said, "As a Smart Grid solutions industry leader, Elster is committed to true interoperability and innovation. This announcement builds on Elster's track record of collaboration and integration to deliver the next generation of interoperability needed by utilities as they deploy Smart Grid solutions."
