Cisco News - Cisco Supports UN Disaster Relief Efforts with ICT Solutions

How can the UN disaster- relief efforts be more productive and accountable at the time of humanitarian emergencies? To strengthen UN disaster relief work, Cisco (News - Alert) will offer its networking technology solutions for emergency communications assistance during disaster relief missions.
Cisco and the United Nations have reached a long-term agreement to expand collaboration for additional disaster response areas.
According to a release, under this agreement, both of the organizations will be able to better collaborate in terms of crisis preparedness, disaster response and technical coordination.
Earlier, Cisco partnered with a number of nonprofit organizations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) where it provided resources and services that enhance each organization's mission capabilities. Cisco has offered humanitarian relief in response to a number of crises throughout the world including after earthquakes struck Japan in 2011, and Haiti in 2010, as well as after Hurricane Katrina devastated parts of the Southeastern United States in 2005.
Chérif Ghaly, chief of the Technical Coordination and Partnerships Unit (TCPU), UN OCHA said, "Reliable networks, connectivity and interoperability are critical components in any emergency telecommunications infrastructure. Cisco's leadership in this domain brings a lot of value to the humanitarian relief efforts.”
Cisco and OCHA will work together to develop a long-term agreement to expand collaboration for additional disaster response areas.
John Stewart, chief security officer and senior vice president, Cisco Global Government Solutions Group said, "Cisco has a long standing, demonstrated commitment to providing assistance during global and national crises.
