Cisco News - X-ES Single Board Computer Placed in Unified Capabilities Approved Product List
By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributor
Extreme Engineering Solutions (X-ES (News - Alert)), a builder of single board computers, claimed that its XPedite7332 air-cooled CompactPCI module running on the Cisco UC Manager has been placed on the Unified Capabilities (UC) Approved Product List (APL) as a Local Session Controller (LSC) for operation on the U.S. Department of Defense communications networks.
The certification process is reported to be the responsibility of the Defense Information Systems Agency (News - Alert) (DISA) Unified Capabilities Connection Office (UCCO) and the XPedite 7332 has been certified to be used for secure military applications.
According to X-ES, the XPedite7332 is a 3U conduction- or air-cooled CompactPCI (News - Alert) (cPCI) single-board computer based on the Intel Corei7 processor and Intel QM57 chipset. With dual cores operating at 2.53, 2.0, or 1.06 GHz, the Intel Corei7 delivers enhanced performance and efficiency for today's network information processing and other embedded computing applications. Complementing processor performance, the XPedite7332 features up to 8 GB of DDR3-1066 ECC SDRAM, XMC support and up to 16 GB of NAND flash and two Gigabit Ethernet ports routed to J2 for additional system flexibility.
The solution is said to be VMware Ready with support for VMware vSphere Hypervisor and using it, the military can run multiple Cisco applications, such as Unified Communications (News - Alert) Manager, on a rugged CompactPCI SBC and realize the same kind of services Cisco apps running on rack-mount servers offer.
“There are a large number of military personnel already trained on Cisco (News - Alert) Integrated Services Routers (ISRs) and enterprise-class equipment. Using the same services and applications their personnel are already trained on enables the military to easily expand their network to the warfighters at the edge of the network utilizing Cisco 5940 ESRs and X-ES Single Board Computers”, said Tony Jeffs, senior director of marketing at Cisco Global Government Solutions Group, in a press release.
