Cisco News - ActionPacked! Networks Brings Color to the Network Visibility Story
By Paula Bernier, Executive Editor, TMC
The LiveAction visibility tool from ActionPacked! Networks gives network engineers a quicker understanding of what’s happening on their networks. In fact, the tool is so graphical, that it sometimes helps these folks discover things that even consultants they used couldn’t find.
That’s the word from Dana Matsunaga, president and CEO of the Honolulu-based firm, whose software visualizes networks, predominantly those based on Cisco (News - Alert) Systems gear. The tool manages, analyzes and configures routers. It addresses NetFlow, QoS, Layer 2 LAN, routing plane and IP SLA.
Matsunaga and Ray Hadulco, director of marketing and communication at ActionPacked! Networks, were at Cisco Live last week in San Diego. At the event, the company was showing a beta demonstration involving a LAN based on Layer 2 Cisco switches. It provided visibility into the path the VLAN took, and offered application visibility and control. Matsunaga told TMCnet that ActionPacked! Networks has been working with the AVC (for application, visibility and control) group at Cisco on this kind of thing. Such capability can allow an organization to see what kind of traffic is flowing over its network and whether that traffic is, for example, from YouTube (News - Alert) or another source.
The existing LiveAction solution provides visibility on a number of fronts. It uses color coding to indicate the status of traffic; for example, in this setting, red is the indication of dropped traffic. When it turns gray that means the router is down. Color coding on connection paths, meanwhile, shows what kind of traffic is on what routes. Users also can opt to see just one type of traffic – like just voice or just video. The tool also displays various parameters in table format.
Matsunaga said users can isolate the flow if something goes wrong and adjust policies in real time. “If there’s a problem, I can hit playback and do forensic analysis,” he adds.
ActionPacked! Networks, which was incorporated in July 2008, is a spinout of Referentia Systems Inc., which today remains a part owner of the business. The company got its start as a Department of Defense research project to allow the Marine Corps to manage its networks remotely. Now the Navy is using the solution too. ActionPacked! Networks also sells to commercial accounts; its customers include Air Methods, National Surgical Hospitals, and the State of Idaho.
