Cisco News - Cisco Offers CCNP Service Provider Certification

By Patrick Lambert, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Cisco (News - Alert) is probably the most well known company in the IT and networking world thanks to everything from their switches to routers to equipment used in the Internet infrastructure. It is also known for its certification programs, which are technical certificates that any IT pro can earn after completing a test and showing their expertise with Cisco products. Some of these certifications are among the hardest in the industry.

Now, Cisco has announced yet another certification process that it added to its portfolio, the CCNP Service Provider certification, developed in order to bring the carrier-grade network engineers up to speed with the latest technology.

Cisco has been busy lately revamping its certifications, including the CCNA Service Provider and the CCIE Service Provider exams. But CCNP is the highest of the bunch and the hardest to pass. So there was a lot of anticipation in the industry to see what Cisco would do to this exam process. Engineers and technicians often get better positions or salaries based on the technical certifications they get, since it shows their expertise on certain hardware solutions. When coupled with the complete training solutions available from Cisco and others, it's a potent exercise.

Some of the key facts released by Cisco about this new certification include a professional level CCNP Service Provider course and exams which are available now, and deliver a deep understanding of major components in IP NGN networks and managed services. This training includes hands-on experience with the Cisco hardware that are used all around the world in Internet companies.

The certification also tests the candidate on a multitude of protocols and services including SP core network services like QoS, MPLS, SP edge services, VPNs, OSPF, Multicast, and so on.

For those interested in pursuing this certification, the process includes four different courses and exams, the SPROUTE, SPADVRUTE, SPCORE and SPEDGE series. Cisco is now offering these along with all its other certifications on its website.
